How to apply

Follow this checklist to make sure you have everything you need to submit a complete application for admission.

Make sure you also know what's not considered.

1. Create your Coalition account

The University of Washington is one of 150 public and private universities across the U.S. that comprise the Coalition for College, a free college planning and application platform. To start planning for college, and eventually apply to the UW, you'll need an account.

2. Add UW to your college list

As you are setting up your Coalition account, you will be prompted to search for schools you are considering and add them to your list. If you do not add the UW to your list during this step, you can always go back and add us later, but you will need to do so in order to access the UW questions and complete your application to the UW.

Click Colleges in the navigation menu. From there, you can search for and add colleges to your list of colleges to apply to. Search for University of Washington to add UW.

Be sure to opt-in to share your contact information with the UW. This will allow us to notify you with any updates that may be important. To opt-in to sharing your contact information, click on the box next to "I want to start sharing my contact information with the University of Washington. They may use the number in my contact information to text message me."

4. Complete the Coalition Profile (80% of the application)

The Coalition Profile is always open. You can complete your profile at any time, even before the UW application opens.

Required sections

Once you've created your Coalition account, you'll see sections to complete like the screen shot below. The UW admission application requires the following Coalition Profile sections:

personal info, contact info, demographics, citizenship, family info, high school info and coursework, college info, in progress college coursework completed college coursework, additional tests fee waiver, honors & distinctions, activities/experience, additional info

Notes:

The UW no longer requires SAT or ACT scores. Test scores reported in the Coalition may be shared when completing the UW section of the application

Fee waiver

The Fee Waiver section is required for U.S. applicants only. International applicants are not eligible for fee waivers at the UW.

Coursework

You are required to report the coursework you've completed in high school.

College in the high school, or dual enrollment
International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum
British-style exams and curriculum
Chinese national curriculum
Indian national curriculum
General instructions for first-year international applicants

English Proficiency Tests

International students must also complete the English Proficiency Tests section.

Coalition Essay

The Coalition Essay within the Profile is not required by the UW. You will submit your essay response and short response in the UW questions (read the prompts on the writing section website).

5. Complete the UW Questions (20% of the application)

The UW questions are available September 1 each year and are required in addition to the Coalition Profile. They include two essays, demographic information and your intended major. If you plan to apply to the Honors Program, you'll find the Honors application within the UW questions as well.

Choose your program

If your first-choice major participates in Direct to Major or Direct to College admission, be sure to select it as your requested first choice to automatically be considered. Second-choice majors are not considered for direct admission programs with one exception. Read more on the admission to majors page.

Writing section

The writing section is a required and important part of your application. The UW requires that you submit your essay and short response within the UW application questions. We are not able to retrieve your essays from the Coalition Essay section of the Profile. If you only submit your essays through the Coalition Essay section of your Profile, we will not receive them, and your application will be incomplete. Additional information about yourself or your circumstances

Maximum length: 200 words

You are not required to write anything in this section, but you may include additional information here if something has particular significance to you. For example, you may use this space if:

You have experienced personal hardships in attaining your education
Your activities have been limited because of work or family obligations
You have experienced unusual limitations or opportunities unique to the schools you attended

6. Pay the application fee

U.S. freshman students

The application fee is nonrefundable and must be submitted each time you apply for admission. It cannot be transferred to another quarter, campus of the UW or to another student.

7. Send test scores?

The UW no longer requires SAT or ACT scores. Students who have taken the exams are welcome to send their scores, however, there is absolutely no advantage or disadvantage in doing so. Learn more about SAT/ACT scores.

International freshman students — English proficiency

International students must submit English proficiency test scores that meet the minimum requirement for admission. Learn more about English proficiency.

8. Send transcripts?

U.S. schools and international schools that follow a U.S. style curriculum

Do not send high school or college transcripts unless you receive a request from the Office of Admissions. The Coalition application asks you to provide a detailed account of your academic coursework, and that's all we need to review your application.

Schools outside the U.S. that follow a national/local curriculum

Regardless of whether you are applying as a U.S. or international student, if you have attended a school outside of the U.S. that follows a national compulsory curriculum,you are required to upload a scanned, unofficial copy of your transcript for grade levels 9 and higher in the Upload section of the UW questions portion of your online application. The Uploads section will not be available to you until you have started the UW questions.

Do not mail high school transcripts or mid-year school reports to the Office of Admissions.

If you have your transcripts stored in the Coalition Locker, you must attach them to yourUW application. The UW cannot access them from your Coalition Locker.

9. Apply now

The autumn 2022 application is now open. You may access the application by adding the University of Washington to your list of schools in the Coalition.

Things we do not consider

No interviews/demonstrated interest

The UW does not conduct formal interviews or consider demonstrated interest in the admission decision.

No letters of recommendation

We ask that you not send letters of recommendation or other supplemental materials such as drawings, CDs, DVDs, books or other portfolio type items. We will learn everything we need to know about you through your essay responses and Coalition Profile.
